Don’t leave the TV, CD player and other electric items on ‘standby’ overnight or if the appliance is not in use. Electrical appliances use about half the power on ‘standby’ as they do in use – some electrical appliances use the same amount of power in standby mode as they do when they are fully switched on.

Check your thermostat regularly. By turning down the temperature of your heating by 1ºC you will save as much as 7% on your heating bills.

Air conditioning is more expensive to run than heating – if it can be avoided in the home your electricity bills will drop dramatically. Close the curtains when temperatures are high in the middle of the day.

Hang the washing out on the line or on a clothes horse rather than use a clothes dryer.

Plan the shopping for the week and do it in one trip only. Buy goods and services online rather than get in the car and travel. All major supermarkets have an online service that will reliably deliver to your door.

Never make special journeys solely to recycle your household’s waste!
